Fire Standard Compliant products – The driving force in cigarette development
26.09.2010
In regards to the fire safety requirements 2008 the Commission of the European Community requested the standardization bodies into establish a relevant standard for reducing the ignition propensity of cigarettes. Following this decision a Standardization Mandate is accepted by CEN (the European Committee for Standardization) in order to elaborate a suitable test method to test whether the fire safety requirement is fulfilled by the cigarette specimens tested. Existing standards in this area shall be considered, in particular the testing method described in ASTM E 2187 "Standard Test Method for Measuring the Ignition Strength of Cigarettes" or any subsequent, active version of the standard.
As CEN does not have a technical body in the field of tobacco products the elaboration of the standardization work at international level was forwarded to ISO. This resulted into the ISO Standard 12863 which is in its final stage and will become regulatory for the European Community within the next 2 years.
The cigarette industry and their suppliers are preparing themselves to fulfill the upcoming requirements. A high potential of development capacity is working on this issue. Not only developing the cigarette itself but also the materials and the production capabilities are involved.
We at Borgwaldt KC support our customers on this way with the development of testing tools focused on banded cigarette paper products in well known Borgwaldt quality:
- Testboxes that fulfill the requirements of the mentioned standards
- The A19 suction device for supporting the lighting of the samples
- An electronically controlled lighter for consistent lighting of the samples
- IP10 a semi automatic 3in1 tester for testing of Ignition Propensity, Burn Rate and Freeburn Testing.
- The Borgwaldt KC Diffusivity Tester for determination of the diffusion capabilities of cigarette papers.
- The A20 with different Head dimensions and customized measurement ranges to control the air permeability of banded and unbanded cigarette paper.
- A temperature sensor array that monitors the heat being transferred from the cigarette to the underlayment during the smoldering process.
- And last but not least our laboratory offers testing of your products in regards to the mentioned standard as a service.
